Word of the Month - HONESTY

Our character education Word of the Month for January was HONESTY.To be honest you must tell the truth.

The story of Jack and the Wolf was a good way to introduce this concept to the students because Jack does not tell the truth in the story. Jack gets in trouble because he plays tricks and lies to his friends. We also read a story called 'I Tell the Truth' which presents students with certain scenarios.

As a class, we made a poster of different times in our lives when we have been honest (in blue) and times when we have not been honest (in red). The discussions we have had in class have been very productive and helpful to the students.

All About Adjectives!

We have been focusing on the concept of adjectives in English class. An adjective is a describing word.

We focused on SIZE words (big, small, long, short, wide, narrow), COLOR words (red, blue, green, yellow, pink), SHAPE words (square, flat, round, rectangle), NUMBER words (one sock, two feet, three pencils) and POSITIVE words (nice, beautiful, pretty, good, fun, happy).

To help students understand how we can use adjectives to describe different nouns - we made visuals.

A tree can be many things - tall, old, brown etc.

A butterfly can be many things - colorful, pretty, small etc.

A flower can be many things - tall, pink, cute etc.

An apple can be many things - yummy, shiny, round etc.

We also used adjectives in our journal writing. Adjectives help to add detail.

To practice at home: Ask your children to describe something for you (their bedroom, the cat, your outfit, the house...)

Class work sent home

Hi Parents,

Today you will find some completed class work in the students' homework diaries. This is work from Lesson 4-6 which we finished before the winter break. It has been marked and evaluated by me. I am sending it home to you. I do not need it back. Please keep it at home or dispose of it.

We are already well into Lesson 7 and will be moving into Lesson 8 in two weeks time.

Thanks,
Ms. Carlee

Winter in 1C and 1N

Winter in Kuwait is not like winter in many other parts of the world - especially Canada. I was able to go home to Canada for the winter break to see my friends and family, but also to experience winter. I really wanted to share this experience with the class.

I built a few snowmen outside of my house and brought back photos of them to share with the class. We discussed the snowmen and wrote a journal entry about it.

Another way to share the winter season with the students was through the gingerbread cookie houses I brought back from Canada, to make with the classes. We were able to construct our houses using cookies at the walls and roof, and icing as the glue to hold it all together. Students were given candy to help decorate the house, and we used marshmallows to build a snowman.

We used the cookie house as inspiration for our second journal entry that week.

Once we were done discussing the cookie house and using adjectives to describe it - we ate it! Yum!
